Toshiro Mayuzumi (1929-1997) composed this work in 1957. I first heard it many years ago on an old Louisville LP, and "wore the record out".

I conducted this live performance many years later, still entranced with the spooky but elegant sounds. The movements are titled Introduction, Interlude, and Finale; Mayuzumi wisely lets the music itself freely evoke what it will, unencumbered by descriptive titles. (There is some humor in writing an Introduction to an Interlude!) Barbara Weiss is the pianist.

The prepared piano, invented by John Cage, has the usual nuts, bolts and erasers wedged at precise spots between the indicated strings.

  • The recording quality of this is the best of any Youtube video I have heard i think - do you know how it was recorded?

  • Yes, it was nicely recorded. Analog on tape, Shure mics, in an acoustically superior recital hall.
