When responding to a chemical spill or other hazardous cleanup operation, first responders and cleanup workers must frequently wear a hazardous materials suit. These suits protect the first responder from chemical exposure. . Unfortunately, they quickly get very hot and humid. Given the fact that a first responder can be in the suit from 30-60 min, overheating is not just a source of discomfort, but is a real hazard to the health of the first responder. The heat/humidity buildup in the suit severely limits the time that can be spent in the suit without risking heat exhaustion. For more on heat stress and its prevention, go to the NIOSH Heat Stress page at http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/heatstress/ . This was clipped from a 1966 film from the People's Republic of China, with English narration. The film shows the emergence of China as a nuclear power and describes the efforts of the Chinese in preparation and conduction of atomic and thermo-nuclear tests in the mid-1960s.
