continuation from part 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISkTPqhOnco

IMPORTANT: *** one important thing i forgot to mention is to first open Volume Control in Ubuntu, click the Options tab and choose Line in both Input drop down boxes ***

here i show you how to record something in audacity and ardour2 played using the korg microkorg xl, the korg kaoss pad kp3 and a kaossilator.
one vital difference between audacity and ardour is that when you use ardour to record you need to turn down the Recording Capture volume in Ubuntu's Volume Control window by about 20% otherwise the audio in will be garbled and faint. this is not a problem in audacity, it can be at 100% and the recording will be completely fine, other than the fact that it will be faint (low, quiet volume), so you need to turn up the Gain slider on the track to somewhere between +20 dB and +30 dB.

  • performance-wise, do you think using Linux with Ardour for music recording and production is faster, more stable and less cpu-intense than using Windows 7 with, say, Caubase 5?

  • @agirotto1 i have no clue, sorry, i dont have windows 7 or cubase so i cant compare.

  • This video just motivated me to get another Linux box up and running with all the bells and whistles as far as hardware goes. I got hardy running on an old box serving up multiple sites and I just got a new hobbie...Making Music!

I'm sure writing drum tracks in LMMS would be easier than in Cubase or Pro-Tools. What has your experience been like?

Think i can find a driver for my Yamaha Audiogram 6? That would be cool if I could. I hate using winblows!

  • @FuzzyMcButterWink i've been using seq24 for drumtracks (with hydrogen connected to seq24) and zynaddsubfx sounds. i tried lmms a year ago and couldnt get into it, plus i think it froze up on me a couple of times so i just ditched it, but maybe it has improved since then...

    here's what i use currently:

    seq24

    hydrogen

    zynaddsubfx

    ardour2

    patchage

  • @nickleus1977 not liking LMMS, Gonna give your set-up a go! All open source? Are you running 10.4 ?

  • @FuzzyMcButterWink im running 10.4 now yes. i should do a new video with all these programs...and a screen without black dots =)

  • @FuzzyMcButterWink i upgraded to ubuntu 10.10 and posted a video showing a quick run through of how to link these programs together using jack and patchage:

  • @vermilion243 thx for the info, man.

  • @agirotto1 I can answer this o.0 ...

Less CPU usage, yes. Audacity doesn't put the strain on your system that Cubase does. I have Windows 7 and Cubase LE5... Cubase obviously allows you to do way more things to your audio, it's professional quality software.. So that CPU usage is there for a reason..

Sorry for being 5 months late.

  • @nickleus1977 ok, thx anyway.
