Advancements in battery technology, sparked from basic scientific research at the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (Sensors and Electron Devices Directorate), have led to the development of a novel composition of matter that's revolutionizing today's battery industry. All of this means -- in general -- that batteries for everything from laptops to cell phones to hybrid cars could soon last much longer and be able to charge faster. But for U.S. Soldiers in particular, the ones who inspired this research, loads they lug in combat may soon become much lighter and less burdensome while still meeting the high energy demand for Soldier-wearable power solutions and technology that provides auxiliary power for on-board vehicles and supply power to unmanned air and ground vehicles, and unattended sensors.
