  • Can you tell us where he gets the materials?

Does he make his own rims?

  • He gets them from various suppliers - some at Ren Fair's, but most others come from traditional places: wood comes from Home Depot in some cases. Yes, he makes his own rims, although he's been using old wine barrels lately and they kind of come with their own.

  • Damn, he should have played one so we could hear what they sound like.

  • I am producing a series of recordings with him that will be available later this year (maybe by Xmas?). They will feature most of his drum designs.

It's really hard to give any sense of the drum's tone or sound here on da Tube as you really have to be in the same room to get the effect.

  • Okay what if the Ties Break

    Could You Start Again?

    And for soaking

Do u use Hot Or cold Water?

    Or Does it Really Matter?

    Im Gonna Try this soon!

  • I will try to get some answers.

If the ties break (very rare) just start over with a new tie. Or tie on a second string and finish, then clip it.

Room-temp water for soaking. Too hot or too cold will wreak havoc on the skins.

  • Coming from a fellow drum-builder...aren't you worried this info will phase us out when the the overpowering might of China's cheap labor-force get a hold of this video?

Information IS the only thing of value anymore...and this is how I feed my family.A nice design nonetheless...and thank you for not calling them 'Sacred Native Drums' it's a testament to your sincerity and humbleness.

  • Thoroughly enjoyed this video, well done! :-)

  • Hey I'm in the process of making a drum...well gathered my buffalo hide and ring and such...I really like the way you strung the drum in what you call ancient/traditional drum...was wondering if you have a video showing close up how you laced the back?

  • @TheCrystalcoyote You're welcome. And I agree; drums should be all about joy and magic. Thanks again!

  • @KentuckyShaman Thanks!

  • @cooolness13 Yes, if you break one, you can pull it all out and re-cut, or just tie a knot in it and keep going. Warm water works fastre, but cold works fine if you're not in a hurry.

  • @Tatooinedragracer See my previous replies.

  • @jameslonglove Excellent questions all. 8 ply would work well if it's heavy enough. I use 10-14 depending on size. My hoops come from large shell tubes that have been "breadsliced" to the depth I need. Lace length is directly proportionate to drum size. Diameter X number of spokes + @25%. A 24" 16 - spoke drum would need 24" x 16 (32') + @ 8' for a total of 40' of lace for my standard design. I just finished one that used over 80' in a 24" drum.

  • @CarlosMacMartin How could I? I don't know any.

  • @trolltrumman Yes, it is, and yes, it does. That is a kill shot. It's a reminder that the animal that gave itself for this drum (and other things) actually gave its life that we might have this magical tool. Very powerful in experienced hands.

  • @seaweedredandbrown Then I've done my job!

  • @mxq Well.... that depends on the type of drumstick. Drop me an e-mail through my website about what you seek and I'll se if I can help.
