Background Info:
Living in Hawaii has been less than paradise for Malaya Bagayan. Growing up half Filipina, half Caucasian has not been a problem until lately as she is preparing to leave home for college on the Mainland and leave behind her parents, siblings and Lola Ligaya, whom she has grown closer to over the past few years. Now, she struggles to find her "true" Filipino identity in her Lola's television shows, Tagalog language that she cannot understand, and of course food as she battles against peers who deny her the right to represent her heritage in her senior showcase. With the help of her Lola, Malaya learns more about her late Lolo Tonio and his struggle to give his family a better life in America despite the compromises he made and the culture he sacrificed for his family to survive. Through the teachings of the past and the promise of a better future, Malaya breaks free and discovers her own identity from within herself, where it has been all along.
