Stop-motion animation music video for the Devo song Whip It. I shot this in the spring of 1982 in my parent's basement over the course of several months (10 weeks?). Photographed on Kodachrome 40 super-8 film on a Sankyo EM-40XL. This was animated to a live-action reference performance that was also shot on super-8 film. There was no post-production editing. All "cuts" were made in camera.
I had seriously contemplated doing animation for Swelling Itching Brain, however with a duration of 4.5 minutes it may have taken about 5 months to complete.
Thematically this piece is far more punk than New Wave and could almost be a supporting video for the Dead Kennedy's track: Your Emotions (with it's expression of contempt for those who passively regurgitate the values of others rather than attempt independent thought). This piece conveyed the percolating rage that was a chronic part of my high school experience. There are various, nearly subliminal, images inserted into the piece which are printed propaganda from my public school "alma mater".
A technical note: The company that transferred the Super-8 to U-matic video did a rather careless job, not only excessively cropping (not unprecedented) by they also framed it asymetrically and hacked off the left side. This was most vexing, having paid a full commercial rate for this service at one of the monolithic post-production houses that used to line Grand Avenue in Chicago in the late '80s.
