John Daly here,

So many people come into my store talking to me about their battles with constipation so I thought I'd tackle a more avant-garde subject today: bowel movements.

Creating the squat position and following the 'gastrocolic reflex' we can become much more regular, as well as have more complete bowel movements. This will keep our system in a cleaner state which leads to more energy, mental clarity and a greater sense of well-being. (Did I mention colon cancer is preventable?)

Water, Fiber, Physical Movement, enzyme-rich food (mostly raw/living foods), and relaxation are excellent adjuncts to the all-mighty squat.

  • I stayed in a yurt a while back and the toilet was an outdoor compost loo. Basically a hole in the ground with some sawdust in it. You had to position over it in much the same sort of position and I must say squatting there in the forest on a beautiful crisp morning, I felt very at one with nature and I'm sure nature felt at one with me. It was quite possibly one of the best poos I've ever had!

  • @TheHolySpirit I've been in a very similar situation volunteering at an ecovillage for several months (yurt included) and can resonate with the 'crispness' you mention of the morning when you're in an outdoor comosting toilet. Yes,... it IS a beautiful thing :D Imagine this in cities, hm?

  • @OldChikity Weird? Not at all... two is probably above average in terms of the 'cultural norm' (which is probably a scary 1 bowel movement in 3 days :\). I often remember a Chinese saying when thinking of the optimal number of bowel movements: "Food in, food out" ;).

  • I think it was kind and brave of you to post this. That sounds kind of silly to say but really. Not anyone would have the maturity to talk seriously and give advice on a topic like this. But it's something everyone needs to know in order to maintain a healthy metabolism. :D

  • @L2PlayRunescape Thank you for your note. At the time, I did think it would be a difficult subject to discuss, but, my feeling at the time was that constipation is linked to almost ALL diseases and if we cannot make 'pooping' a jovial and open topic, then we'll only be healing half an issue. ;) We need to get the unhealthy OUT before we can get the nourishing IN.
