I've been throwing money at preparedness for a while now but I've never actually tested some of it. I decided to have a simulated power outage and see how comfortable I am in such a situation.

  • wtf is your mountain bike doing in the bathroom

  • born68

LOL, Ok, that's a reasonable question so I'll answer. I have two bathrooms and that's the one that I almost never use. I've since thrown that mountain bike in my storage locker though, so it's available when I have friends over.

  • To avoid waste, it's important to use up refrigerated foods as soon as you can. After that, you have a nice, big cabinet to store things in.

A dry run is a great idea. There might be +/- 30,000 people (1 in 10,000) in this whole country with this level of preparedness. Hopefully, that number will increase, with the release of these vids. =^[.]^=

Definitely! I'd avoid opening the fridge until I had to since once you open it, the cold air spills right out and is lost. First thing I'd do is boil all the eggs. Then the next day I'd slice the frozen meat thin and cook it on low till it's jerky. If the fruit starts to get old I'll juice it (my juicer works with the battery cart).

I cheated during the experiment and left the fuse for the fridge turned on. No need to be adventurous with my groceries.

  • My kinda vids, great stuff

  • Thanks! I'm not very good with sorting out news stories but when it comes to finding ways to be comfortable during adversity, I'm there!

  • I saw a cooler in my hardware store that cools up to 20C below ambient temperature using either AC wall power, DC car battery power, or propane. Propane operation is permitted only in the open air, though. To keep a freezer running would take a full generator that runs on propane.

  • Fail. You gotta use the batt man.

  • Great series.........we all should be practicing this so we don't panic! Longest I've ever had to go without power was a week, after a hurricane caused lots of downed trees.

  • I've just got a green egg bbq. Fairly traditional, but they can get quite hot. When in doubt - use good old fire.
