This excerpt from NBC's preview show for the 1969-70 prime time season introduced a short-lived sitcom loosely based on the life and work of James Thurber. From the Classic TV collection at archive.org
Two of my best friends met Wiliam Windom in a hotel bar one afternoon. He was a guest speaker at Star Trek convention, which we were all attending. While i was watching other speakers they spent the afternoon with him, a very nice man. All he had to say about Star Trek was "I just stared at a blank screen the whole time - they put in the SE later, and he laughed at all the fuss fans made. Last of the great ST cons in LA. '90 or '91 - Original crew, STTNG crew, guest speakers from both series
After a tough Monday at middle school, dinner eaten, homework completed, I race to the rec room turn on the RCA New Vista color TV to watch my favorite show "MW&WTI" only to have daddy come downstairs (after the church meeting) and announce, "Gunsmoke's on" and then switch the dial from NBC to CBS. I only saw 2 episodes until a few years later when NBC ran it as a summer replacement. But it was Summer and I'd just learned how to drive and gas was $0.33 cents a gallon, so I still missed it.
STill one of the greatest TV series ever...William Windom used to tour the country as James Thurber and often referred how much he loved doing the show...his gripe was that NBC was expecting something more like "Father Knows Best", which it wasn't, and that after 6 weeks put the show out to pasture. 5 shows were shot after cancellation, because it was hoped that the new PBS network (old NET) would run it, but PBS 13 in NYC couldn't afford the cost of producing it.
Yes, that is Hugh Downs' voice, 'pyncho'. He and Joe Garagiola were co-hosts of the fall preview presentation this appeared in, shown at their "TODAY SHOW" desk...

Windom won for Best Actor in the category, the show won Best Comedy. I remember those Emmys, too because of what Windom said.

I was a budding cartoonist at the time, and have fond memories of this show. I wish it had lasted longer...

Is Hugh Downs the announcer? He would still have been hosting the TODAY show at that time.
