Carving A Traditional Wooden Cup

This is a drinking cup - more commonly known as a Kåsa . It is a variation of a Ladle or Scoop and can be used as one. But I would be inclined to use it as a drinking vessel.

How well does warm to hot beverages such as coffee fair in a cup like this ? Is there a prefered way to best seal the cup ?I think this wood make a great Scout project !
