For many years this aria meant for me Callas. Any other singer I couldn't stand in this piece... and then, I heard Renata Scotto. She sings it absolutely in her own way and this way is wonderful...

i wouldnt describe scotto sound as smooth or comforting.....she is the queen of "squillo" and verismo singing....my favorite soprano......but not a smooth voice.....renee fleming has a "smooth and comforting voice"

Pienamente d'accordo con
pigsears:"wonderful".In quest'aria,e non solo,si ritorna al solito discorso della voce traballante, acidula, stridente della Scotto nel registro acuto. Ebbene,secondo il mio modesto parere,la completezza di un'artista non passa unicamente attraverso la voce "paradisiaca" ma è un connubio fra tale elemento e ciò che l'interprete esprime in tale contesto, vale a dire:intensità,taglio drammatico nell'interpretazione.Questa è una componente primaria della "Renata"!.

Solo la Callas mi dà l'emozione che Umberto Giordano voleva esprimere . Ma la Scotto ha la passione e ovviamente la bravura dalla sua .............

beautiful phrasing here. saw her from the front row at a gala at the met, perhaps in 1976, I would not call her one of the greats, but she was a very rewarding singer.. Beautifully done here.

Grande interpretazione drammaticamente in linea con quello che sta succedendo. Non possiamo fare un paragone con la Callas che ha delle caratteristiche vocali completamente diverse.

The top note was squally, but I love this performance. It's so musical and dramatic....

I agree... she gives it more subtleness than Callas does, anyway I love both performances.
