Amazing that for a country that has been churning out vast quantities of modern music for decades that radio stations either had to go to sea or to another country to avoid the law. While private modern music stations were sprouting all over the USA, the patritian, change for changes sake, protectionist we know best brigade here were busy, in the best British anchor dragging tradition, telling everyone the World was flat.
Your a sick puppy, all this really meant to use back then was music to make us feel good. Don't turn good to bad with your self centred egotistical crap, get a life
In the media mythology of the 1960s it is seen as part of the rebellious counterculture. In reality it had been deliberately created by the New Right - as a part of their counter-revolution.
I was stationed in germany from 64 to 67 in the army(US) Used to pick up "RADIO CAROLINE" late at night on the short wave band, they played all the latest music.
before the pirates we had deadsville BBC 'light programme'-one PC popsong show every couple of days!...then in 64 came the pirates - caroline--london-- city etc and along with them the Swinging 60s--then in 67 phoney Tony Ben Labour Minister for Greyness brought in a law banning uk companies from advertising on the pirates and they eventually packed it in--instead we were given boring mediocre BBC Radio 1 and 2 with the playlist planned weeks in advance by dull penpusher bureaucrats
