@chickenwretch simple as ever -- the outcry is because of the implication made by those who call Obama a "Muslim". The idea is that he is "foreign, and thus bad", and perhaps a "terrorist sympathizer". The latter of these implications is a direct result of the Islamophobia drilled into Americans after 9/11. It would not matter if Obama was really a Muslim. The problem is, calling him a "Muslim" because of his name -is- bigoted and sniveling double-speak.
