My point is, when Madoff said 'it is gone, all gone' it wasn't. He was effectively a fall guy but that money didn't just go to nowhere land, it went somewhere and is till making money, and the ones collecting that money are banks like chase and HsBC. In other words, if I owned Chase, I would get some guy like Madoff to do a scheme like this, and one day 20 years from now, he'd get to live the good life for 20 years and know if caught he'd take the rap, but the money lives on in bank pockets

They had some court cases recently apparently Chase and HSBC were sued for money owed to madoff victims. I'm not saying these large banks were behind Madoff but if some individuals at those banks knew about Madoff they could be considered something like indirect partners. They see he was success and money is money so no matter how it was obtain they were the ones who got to keep/invest it. So they helped 'enable' Madoff. In otherwords, big banks would love a Madoff, he helps collect money
