The character of Jose Jimenez was supposed to be a take on an immigrant's wide-eyed look at his new country. At the time of the show(1964), it was thought to make Jose a Puerto Rican, technically an American citizen, to avoid INS-type storylines. Jose was supposed to be a Jibaro, the PR equivalent of a hick, in order to further emphasise the point of fish-out-of-water. Jose was more or less Gomer or Goober with a Spanish accent.
As time passed, Dana realized that such ethnic humor by a person not of that ethnic group was becoming offensive. Hispanic groups began protesting Dana's portrayal of the dim-witted Hispanic character. In 1970, Dana announced to ten thousand Mexican Americans attending a cultural pride festival that "after tonight, José Jiménez is dead". In 1997 Dana received an image award from the National Hispanic Media Coalition.
I thought Mr. Phillips was really a jerk to Jose. That's probably why I didn't feel too sorry for him when a year or two as Dr. Smith he freaked out at the sight of his own shadow.
You go HughJardon69. I'm sick of hearing that being liberal is bad. Republicans somehow got it into their heads that they are the only ones who are christians. One question: How did the two of you end up with an argument about Palin while watching this video?
