Kamiros was one of the 3 cities built on the island of Rhodes by Dorians around the 12th century BC, together with Lalyssos and Lindos. These 3 cities were said by homeros to have participated in the Trojan War on greek side.
It was largely destroyed by an earthquake in 226 BC then rebuilt. In 142 BC another major earthquake occured, leading its citizens to leave the city for good. Kamiros was rediscovered in 1859 and excavated in 1914 and 1923-1926 by Italian archeologists.
It is said to be the pompei of greece due to its good preservation and should have housed at least 400 families thanks to a water cistern of 600 m³, located on the acropolis.
