This was for a songwriting class where every week we wrote a song using the concepts discussed in the previous class. This one was "melodic bass movement". Not that the bass line in this is particularly melodic, but most of the chords are not in root position and the bass line just moves down by step.

We had a simultaneous assignment of reharmonizing a nursery rhyme. It was through that process that I started playing around with reimagining a nursery rhyme.

The vocal transformations were the result of playing around in GarageBand and hearing something that sounded kind of cool. The song just sort of came from that sound (and from the odd, slightly scary sensation of hearing my voice transformed in real time; it was as though someone else's voice was coming out of my throat).

The main vocal line was recorded in one take, stream of consciousness. I originally had a "bit crusher" filter on, which turned the heavy breath at the end into this staticky crackle. Later on, I took off that filter, but kept the breathing.

I've wanted to post it for a while, but wasn't sure how to present it. Finally, last night, I just sat down and did it. I didn't have a lot of time to mess around with it, but wanted a visual that was in sync with the unnerving sound of the song.

Hope you enjoy it!

  • I have been trying to paint a painting in response to this song for some time now. I was moved by the sad message in this song. To me in communicates some one (Mary) sacrificing their dream, that pure dream (the lamb) for the sake of being able to eat/ provide for their family. I can think of many who have had to tearfully lay down there desires and hopes in order to just get by. This song is so moving!
