thanks for the song, i dont think he should have publicized a killers name, and make him famous unless he researched why and if it caused good people some grief but i sure do enjoy old cash songs !!!

I was astonished when doing my family history and I found out that the man Johnny Cash sings about in this song, Johnson Van Dyke Grigsby, was a real person, really sent to prison in 1908 as the song says....and especially when I found out he was sent to the prison in Michigan City for murdering my great grandfather (my grandfather's dad). Clearly though, the song is wrong when it says he was "paroled in 89." The song was recorded in '76, and I believe it was 74 when he was paroled.
