Lee Hazlewood said that he intentionally wrote the lyrics to be as nonsensical as possible. In a nightclub he saw kids with eyedroppers putting something on sugar cubes. He asked them what it was and they told him "LSD" One of the kids told him it was "kinda like Sugartown" Hence his inspiration for this song. Nancy and Lee had to keep this bit of information from the Record Company!
