South Carolina has been leading the charge against a public option. Jim Demint wants to make U.S. health care reform, Obamas Waterloo. Joe Wilson interrupted the Presidents speech, as we all know. Lindsey Graham equates the choice of a public option with a government takeover. But should the nation follow South Carolinas lead?

I lived in S. Carolina for a year when I was young. It is a beautiful state and the people are kind. But how healthy is South Carolina? Rachel Maddow asked that question this week. She looked at S. Carolinas healthcare issues using various standards.

Was she right? I did a little research on my own. Healthcare is a complex issue and many factors influence the outcomes. But I think that the S. Carolina lawmakers should try to resolve their own states problems before weighing in with such self-assurance on the problems of the country.

Our choice is not between "the status quo and reform. The choice is between reform and the way things will be if we dont do something about it.

Insurance premiums have skyrocketed--131% over the last 10 years. Without real reform, more and more individuals and businesses will be unable to afford insurance in the future.

The employer survey, in its 11th year, calculated a 131% increase in premiums for family coverage over the past 10 years, more than three times the rise in worker wages and more than four times the inflation rate. Over that time, workers contributions to premiums rose 128%.

So lets look for some real solutions. Being uninsured is dangerous. According to the Institute of Medicine, 18,000 uninsured people die every year because they cant access the care they need.

  • Alison, I live in SC and you are full of it. The stats you resort to are tilted becaue this is a retirement state, like FLA. People for years moved here to avoid the cold from Ohio, WVa, and NY. They brought their health issues with them. What we need are some real FREE MARKET solutions not a federal mandate and socialist public option. Keep your hands off my health care and my health insureance.

  • No one is touching your insurance. And you can keep your Joe Wilson. I just don't think the nation needs to follow SC's example. It is not just old people who cause these stats. You can have your insurance and pay their CEO 11 million a year if you think he or she is really worth 30,000 per day. I'd like the OPTION of a gov't or a non-profit plan.

  • How do you connect diagnosis of Adult Diabetes to "Health Care Reform". That's becasue we LOVE fried food and sit on our asses all day. Has NOTHING to do with the state legislature. We have a high "uninsured" population because our economy is crappy. Once again, NOTHING to do with Health Care Reform. State Govt. CAN'T AFFORD to just give away health insurance to all state citizens. You make NO valid points in your video whatsoever.

  • "Sitting on your asses all day" has obviously altered your brain cells. If you watched the video you will note that I am not telling anyone in SC what they should do or how they should vote. That's your business. I'm just suggesting that your politicians tend to their own state first and stop trying to lead the whole country down the same path,

  • Wait a minute, HOLD THE PRESS, I just looked at your website and you're NOT even an American. Is that correct? You're Italian?

It's nothing short of amusing that a you want to "Get together and talk about SC (American) Healthcare" when your country was responsible for Mussolini. Let 's talk about that shall we?

  • No, that is not correct. I am as American as you. So I have no responsibility for Mussolini. (Or anything else that happened anywhere in the world before I was born.) I happen to be living in Italy because I work here at the moment. I did spend one year in SC and was very welcome. Of course, I didn't hang out with hostile angry and abusive people, so that's probably why I got on so well. I think SC deserves better and I don't think the rest of the nation should follow their example on healthcare

  • Bottom line, if you don't live in SC right NOW. DON'T COMMENT ON SC OR OUR POLITICIANS. WE LIKE THEM. WE VOTED THEM IN. WE'LL VOTE THEM IN AGAIN!!!!!

  • You're an idiot, NONE of that has ANYTHING to do with SC Healthcare. It's lifestyle and economics. You made ZERO valid points. Here's and idea, if you're not from SC, DON'T SPEAK ABOUT SC ISSUES. Did that ever occur to you? We LOVE Wilson here and Graham. He was the ONLY one with enough audacity to call things what they were. You worry about San Fran. and let us worry about SC. Trust me you WOULD NOT be welcome here anyway.

  • Thanks Jeep. I still hope for a strong public option.

  • Alison, you're awesome! You make very valid points that the citizens of South Carolina should listen to the next time they go to vote.
