This is the hard drive in my Dell 4600. My motherboard was replaced a few months ago 'cause I...kinda burned it out. But the hard drive is original. It is an 80gig and is about 5 years old. It is a Hitachi DeskStar.

In the past year the hard drive has become kinda noisy like you hear now and I hear an intermittent high pitch clicking sound when the drive is reading. It started out as hearing it every once in awhile and now I hear it really often. This is all over the course of a year.

Is my hard drive going bad? or just getting aged?
Any info will help.

Thanks

Update:
My hard drive is now quiet again and I am not sure why. I also fiddled with my RAM chips and a couple other things on my mother board, now the HDD light is bright like it should be. I have no idea why it was so dim before. But it had been like that for a little over a year.

  • Sounds like the hard drive is constantly accessing data. It could be infections by any chance. Usually when hard drive isn't making that noise, and the light indicator is off, it means that the hard drive is idle. Something is constantly accessing your hard drive.

  • Actually, when I was recording this video I was running a Disk Defrag. and that is what made the drive read constantly.

When I am not using the computer the drive will sit at idle.

I don't know what I have changed but now the drive is almost completely silent. It is really odd.

  • Thanks for the info. I was getting concerned about it because it always used to be almost silent.

Now it doesn't make as much noise as it did. Not sure what changed to make it quiet again.

  • Some hard drives are just noisy. Mine is the same. It could also be the quality of the PC tower, like if it's thin like mine, you'll hear it more (as I do with the fan as well). In fact it causes interference from my headphone jack (which is very annoying). I don't get the clicking sound though, just the rumbling (like it has a bad stomach or something).

  • @owmyanus Btw, my hard disk sounds just like yours, I dont know what is happening with my HDD

  • 1:20 I thought it was my cellphone lol !

  • SCD Truco Ello!

  • You should try diskepper it will help your hard drive find information faster

  • I just started to get that annoying ass noise now when I'm watching certain HD video on youtube. It really does sound like the hard drive is constantly accessing some data.... I wonder how I could fix this because it's annoying.

  • @owmyanus well you said you defragged it that could be what fixed it now the hard drive iint having to jump around to get your data its just right where it needs it i could go in depth but im sure you dont wanna read all that but yeah that seems to be the answer to it quieting down have you noticed any speed performance as a result

  • haha i got that same noise on my dell 4700 but not sure how to turn it on as idk if the MOB is bad or power supply- this sucks for me! btw i got the same phone XD
