During the 1920's and the 1930's the Ku Klux Klan had began to lynch anyone who wasn't white. Blacks, Jews, Asians and everyone else. This usually occurred in the south but the state of Pennsylvania made a postcard with two black me hanging from a tree. So a New York school teacher wrote this poem (I forget his name) and Billie Holiday is singing it.

The author of the song is Abel Meeropol, he actually wrote it under the title "Bitter Fruit" at first, later on he rewrote it as a song and performed it with his wife. You know the rest of the story. A great song that have had a great impact on the world.
