"Claudio Gentile: Villain or Hero?"

Claudio Gentile is the Italian hardman defender and man-marker who is most famously remembered worldwide for his rough 'professional' man-marking on Diego Maradona and Zico in the 1982 World Cup. He is also one of the Italian heros of the 1982 triumph, one of Enzo Bearzot's faithful boys...

No doubt that Gentile's 'hand pulling and chest pushing' marking would be more severely punished in today's football, but the Juventus player, knew very well how to balance his roughness to avoid having the referees see Red... Outside of the field Claudio was always a gentleman and a nice person. Recently the 2010 World Cup, showed a modern example of such defensive approach through the dutch finalist player Van Bommel...

To defend Gentile's bad reputation one can point that in his whole career he had just one Red card, and that was for an intentional handball, and Claudio also never seriously injured an opponent...
When not assigned with the mission to man mark an opponent (which meant not allow him to touch the ball), Gentile proved to be a good team player and participated actively in his teams offensive moves. It was from his cross that Paolo Rossi scored Italy's opener in the 1982 Final. His punishment for his rough displays against Maradona and Zico was two yellow cards, which made him miss the semi-final game against Poland.

Gentile played 71 games with Italy, shifting between the stopper and either side full-back positions. he played with Juventus from 1973 till 1984, and later for Fiorentina for 3 years.
He coached Italy's under 21 national team from 2000 to 2006, guiding them the 2004 European championships.

This video immortalizes Gentile's defensive art against Maradona and Zico in 1982, and the Italian's World Cup victory.

  • congratulations for the video.

Gentile was a great player and only in that way was possible to stop Zico and Maradona at that time.
