@operaclassicc This rendition by Cossotto is simply amazing. Maybe you already know it but if not I strongly recomend you to hear the rendition by Lina Bruna-Rasa which is intensity is beyond words.

Instead I was a friend of hers but it is not out of amity that I think Fiorenza has been the greatest mezzo (and even dramatic soprano, for that matter...) of her time. The colour of her voice is unattainable, the pitch absolutely perfect, as well as her 'emissione' and acting. Unfortunately her voice got strained too soon, and she insisted in singing like in the old glorious days, even though they had gone. Maybe her late divorce devastated her and she wanted to compensate her distress...

She is not overacting. Remember she is in a live performance and has to project the emotion to the back of the theater. If she was doing the part for film only she would be much smaller I am sure.
