It would take so long for your thumb to wear into the pickup. When it does, you get a new pickup cover, probably less than five bucks. If it helps you play, go ahead and rest your thumb there. That's my opinion.

@elzilcho44 Just a few months back I started learning bass and my body's so tense I couldn't shift my thumb away from the E string in time when I play it. So I anchored my thumb on the pickup no matter what string I play "just to get outa the way". This guy's just giving advice to beginners not to rely on the "anchor" because you gotta free up the hand. If you press too hard on the anchor your thumb can sweat more than needed, cos you're working your thumb by pressing on the pickup; bad habit.

the video is very helpful for me it is true that it makes you slow down a little bit in wrong hand positioning i like this baby hahha

@SmithIRL Thats what I have come to understand. Apparently you are supposed to just move your shoulder and keep everything else loose (elbow at a 90 degree angle above bass). Many famous bass players still do what this guy is doing though. They have just learned to bypass their bodies' natural reaction to tense up in the position.

@SlashisaguitarGod22 Yes. You only use your index and middle fingers. Later on after you get to more intermediate levels you might want to include some slapping and popping techniques in your training and after you get to a more advanced level you could always try the 3-finger method (Example: Ryan Martinie)

MAKE SURE THOSE NOTES RING OUT

He has very short fingers so resting thumb on a pickup really slows him down. On the other side, I have very long fingers so it really doesn't matters to me. We are all different.

really good instructional video man, especially loved the tip about resting the thumb on the pickup, i believe resting your forearm on the bass is a bad habit though? apparently it strains your tendons more and leads to your hands weakening, maybe im wrong, either way thanks for the video man! :)
