Marnix de Nijs has been experimenting with the physical relationship between the human body and machines for a couple of years now. The works he creates are tangible representations of this relationship. Last year, his installation Run Motherfucker Run was a great hit on STRP.
During a visit to the city of Beijing, De Nijs was fascinated by the enormous dynamics and acceleration of the metropolis. The Beijing Accelerator explores the effects of a tempo-driven society on the individual. In the case of Beijing, this is a very relevant theme, for the speed and the dynamics of city life in Beijing are not only determined by lightning-fast digital developments but even more so by huge numbers of urban development plans.
The Beijing Accelerator is an interactive installation with a racing-car seat in which you have to sit. By means of a joystick, you can control the rotational speed and the direction. On the screen fixed to the construction are projections of moving film images of Beijing, which you have to synchronize with the speed of your chair. When you succeed, it means that you control the installation so that you can see the images properly. However, after some time, when you reach the next level where the preset speed is even faster, it becomes more and more difficult to synchronize the images. Can you imagine how you feel once you have reached level 6?
