CARROLLTON-
On senior night in Carrollton, I got a chance to see the much heralded Hawks defense put on an impressive display as they held Triopia to just 8 points. Offensively. Carrollton's Sr. QB #9 Jordan Brannon, #4 So. RB Matt Schmidt, and #3 Sr. RB Koty Garber combined to score the first three TD's for Carrollton.
Triopia responded by moving the chains on a 30+ yard pass play from #8 Jr. QB Tyler Huddleston to #30 Sr. TE Marc Luttrell. Four plays later, Huddleston hooked up with #25 So David Arendt in the endzone from 21 yards out, which would turn out to be Triopia's only score.
Carrollton head coach Nick Flowers has the Hawks defense hitting hard, especially their linebackers. They fly to the ball and don't over pursue. Triopia coach Andy Phelps has a Trojans team which plenty tough enough but is missing some of the team speed they have had in the previous seasons. Some media members have stated the WIVC is down a little bit as a whole, but Routt, Carrollton, Brown County, and Calhoun will get a chance in the playoffs to uphold the WIVC banner.
Other notes: It was great to see and visit with loyal Illini fan Brian "B-MAR" Marsaglia on the Triopia sidelines. I thought the Carrollton senior night festivities were pretty cool (live band), the field was decorated up nicely, the marching band was entertaining, and the Hawks Booster Club pork chop sandwich was tasty. Good to see some Routt coaches/fans at this game scouting. Like many towns, Triopia has some fans along the fence who need to close their yaps. By their asinine and obnoxious comments. it's obvious they are NOT qualified to coach and they know who they are.
