A delightful film about a rarely-heard voice of... (more)
Added: 01 December 2007
A delightful film about a rarely-heard voice of Middle England, featuring four women who are keen to show people that they are Thoroughly Modern Muslims. Haleh is a professor, Asia is a cartoonist, Maryam is a trainee solicitor and Fari is a full-time mum and qualified GP.

Aided by a friendly commentary from actress Mina Anwar, they invite viewers to see Britain and Islam through their eyes, and show how they interpret the foundations of their faith in contemporary British culture.

The programme addresses all the issues expected from a documentary about Muslims -- head-covering, terrorism and the Five Pillars of Islam -- but people might not expect the spirit of friendliness, humour and warmth that these four women display, from Professor Haleh's modest rebellion against fasting, to young mum Fari persuading her daughter to eat her greens. And, while Asia tries to persuade the world that she isn't oppressed, Mancunian Maryam hopes one day she'll be a "strong enough person" to cover her head. They're dedicated followers of Islam, but passionate about the little things that make Britain a great place.

She's A Thoroughly Modern Muslim is 30 minutes in the company of four women -- thoroughly British and thoroughly Muslim -- who strive to meet the challenges posed by faith and British culture.

  • To each different set of people in the world, freedom means different. The definition of freedom is not quite universal as we think it is. it wud be a really robotic world if freedom means the same to everyone. differences between people living this world is what makes this world very interesting! i love it! :)

  • @Shamiyae2 - pikthalls version is one of the oldest and most respected translations of the quran. Maybe you need to accept that the abrahamic religions are not religions of peace. And as for decimating whole towns......sodom and gomorah?!?

  • @rarrapind whoa there ! Copy of the Quran by who??..I think you should look for an authentic translation written by someone who knows what the Quran means and not just some guy that is doing word for word translation and on another note..I don't recall any part of the Quran stating that God commands any prophet to decimate anyone..so gets ur facts straight.

  • I love Maryam! She's knows so much! Masha Allah

  • @nacaaswanacas What do you mean under mens rules?

  • @mizarab yet the only image of islam that is promoted in the world is a middle-eastern view. there IS racism in islam just like there s many other things that r unlawful thanks to fake muslims. so here s a small visualization for u: it s easier for someone who can also enter a building to destroy it faster than the one who cannot enter and can only destroy it from outside. either one follows islam or they dont, simple.

  • Modern Muslimah====== LIVE YOUR OWN LIFE under Quraan not under Mens rules unlike in muslim majority country

    Proud British Muslim

  • Modern Muslim.... so they nid an exuse to not wanna kill people...

  • I have a copy of the quran in english by Pickthall and I must say I found it very similar to the bible. Some good stories and guidance but lots of violence and atrocities. Stories where god has instructed someone (usually a prophet) to decimate whole towns just for violating his will and code. Im sorry but that is not the kind of god I have any time for. The modern equivalent of this is known as genocide!

  • @rarrapind Actually it mentions prophets who had no religious following, who weren't named and who were still messengers. I think it may be good for you to actually read the Qur'an. Good guidance is good guidance, and I am sure many religions stem from this idea. I think many different religions started off correct but deviated over time. Jews, Samaritans, and Christians are the only ones named by their worldly name.
