This video is of a Wa'akaulua,or Hawaiian Double Hulled Sailing Canoe,
sailing at the 2009 Cultural Festival at Pu'ukohola Heiau National Historical Site . http://www.nps.gov/puhe/historyculture/index.htm
Footage is by Dale and Jody Fergerstrom, both Hawaiians who are very knowledgable in rigging, sailing and steering of Wa'akaukahi,or Outrigger Sailing Canoes,
as well as Wa'akaulua. Dale edited the video.Mahalo.
The Wa'a itself is a 28 foot (8.53meters) long and 9 feet(2.74 meters) wide with sail area od 115 square feet (10.7 square meters).
The hulls were built in 1953 and were originally used for surfing in the 1950's '60's,and '70's at Waikiki as 2 separate outrigger canoes, propelled by paddles. The one that is now the Akea (starboard) hull was once owned by Louis Kahanamoku, brother of Hawai'is ambassador of surfing Duke Kahanamoku, and was named "Wahine 'Akala,or Pink Lady, after the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, the pink hotel at Waikiki. The one that is now the Ama (port) hull was at Mahai'ula in Kona and was named posthumously afte Keoni Nakai, her surfing steersman in the 1980's.
Both were moulded from a Koa wood dugout carved at Honaunau in 1926 for A.E."Toots" Minneville, renowned Waikiki beachboy.
In 1992,the current captain ,Kiko Johnston-Kitazawa rebuilt them into a double canoe and has been sailing them since at Hawaiian cultural festivals, for school groups, and on historical/culural sailing charters.
