Til Ungdommen - version by Côr Gobaith (Norwegian, English, Welsh)

Til Ungdommen ("For The Youth"), also known by the words of the first line, Kringsatt av Fiender ("Surrounded by Enemies"), is a poem from 1936 by Norwegian poet and writer Nordahl Grieg written following the breakout of the Spanish Civil War. It was set to music in 1952 by the Danish composer Otto Mortensen. After the terror attacks in Norway on 22 July 2011, it was used in many memorial gatherings and services.

The English and Welsh verses we sing were translated by members of Côr Gobaith from the original Norwegian verses for our shortened version of the song, the tune was further arranged by Vincent Keating. The literal translations of its verses are from Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Til_Ungdommen).

Circled by enemies,
your time is now!
Having to face the storm,
not knowing how,

Maybe you ask in fear,
helpless and open:
What shall I battle with,
what is my weapon?

This is your battle plan:
strengthen your mind,
Trust your belief in life
and humankind.

For all our future's sake,
no-one must end it,
Though we may pay the price
and die to defend it.

This is our promise
from brother to brother:
We will be good to
humanity's earth.

We will take care of
the beauty, the warmth
as if we carried a child
carefully in our arms

  • Sound is a little odd as the camera's agc loudens the quiet bits and quietens the louder portions. - unfortunately there was a recording error in the secondary, higher quality, recording and it couldn't be used. - deuxeglise
