The Tomcat was the star of this movie. I remember when TG came out memorial day weekend in 86, I saw it 3 times the first weekend. This movie was still playing at the theatres the following Thanksgiving, that's how popular it was. But alas, we were duped. Yeap. This version of the tomcat was either the A or the B model. These were boyscout models compared to the super awesome D-model Tomcat. And that didn't reach operation until like 1990.
Come on, guys. Don't be delusioned. The version of the Tommy in this movie was WEAK. Only when the super Cat F-14-D came on line did the Tomcat really live up to its awesome potential. And then it was around only about 15 more years. Dick Chain-Me decided it needed to be relegated to the scrap heap, and so it was! Anyway, they needed to build the D-model back in 1970. 30 years is too long to run on substandard engines and fooling people it's an 'awesome' plane in movies.
