The first rag published by a black composer, Tom Turpin's "Harlem Rag" dates from 1897. Turpin was the proprietor of the famous Rose-Bud Cafe after which Scott Joplin's "Rose-Bud March" was named.
Marty Eggers is on the upright piano to the left, with Frederick Hodges on the grand piano to the right.
The laughter at the start of this video is because Frederick, assuming the audience would know this very well-known rag anyway, introduced it with a fake title: "I Kissed Her Two Sweet Lips and Left Her Behind for You".
Recorded on Sunday 12 August 2007 during the 9th annual Sutter Creek Ragtime Festival.

And the winner, using all his 18 fingers in complete violation of the rules, is Mr. Frederick Hodges!

hahaha great ending. I never would have put those two together based on guesswork and preconceived notions, but you know, it works really well!
