Truly one of the best records of the '50's, this recording was one of those responsible for making me fall in love with the music of the era. If the beauty and innocence of the decade could be captured in a song, it would be this one. A classic sung by one of the best, and most under-rated girl groups. The girls were 19 at the time of this recording.

The theme of the song is as pertinent today as it was at the time. As one of the Poni-Tails, Patti McCabe, explained in Billboard at the time, "It's a message song. Lots of girls fall in love with an older guy. It's like the junior high school girl who secretly loves the senior who's the football captain. Or the high school girl whose boy is away in college. "Born Too Late" gets very close to home with a lot of girls for that reason".

Certainly a timeless song with a universal theme.

Charted at #7 on Billboard Hot 100 in July 1958, #5 on UK Singles chart, and #11 on Billboard R&B chart.

  • Should be remembered always, induct into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame !

  • @radr4lf12 Right on, it's about time they got the respect they deserve! The Poni-Tails are one of the pioneers of the girl group sound, not to mention that this song appeals to all generations. I think it's the most popular record I've ever posted.

  • @65stratplayer - That Christian doctor knows not what he speaks. I am so tired of you negative people who want the rest of the world to be miserable just because you won't take responsibility for making yourself happy. Life is NOT 'ugly.' Why bother going on if you believe that. How silly. There are many great singers around today but if you have such a horrid attitude you won't bother to look for them, will you. If you don't have anything uplifting to say then don't say anything at all.

  • I was born 1950,lived through that period of music and into the 60s.Great music from these years and in answer to an earlier post about the Beatles. No the beatles never ended the rock n roll days with their music .I believe they actually preserved those wonderful tunes as we can go back over and oven again via youtube.I,m lost in the 50s and loving it.Hotrods ,wing tips, bowling shirts and great music.

  • That sax just nails this song. Classic!

  • Composer Charles Strouse went on to write Broadway musicals like Bye, Bye Birdy and Annie.

  • The record was discovered and promoted by the late great DJ Bobby Dale.

  • @FredericaBimble

And your negativity towards others' negativity is equally frustrating and annoying. The fact of the matter is that due to the music industry today, the variety of good music that actually makes it to mainstream radio is obnoxiously low (Adele is of course an exception). Add auto tune to the mix, and you have the recipe for suck (Adele of course is an exception once again).

  • patience and prudence should be in the ROCK&ROLL HALL OF FAME THEY NEVER GOT THE BREAK THAT WENT TO OTHERS AND NOT TO THEM VERY SAD

  • Being as an Asia music lover, I listened this song from the radio and caught my ears ever since I was 12 years or back in 1967. Thanks for uploading, one of my most favourites.

  • As an 18 year old in 58 - these songs were killers. Great - Graham- Melb - Aus
