Garrett Hack from Vermont was here in Tokyo for a few days, we were able to arrange a class/demo with Garrett showing his great skill and knowledge of woodworking, especially with hand planes. This video is a quick one showing Garrett using a Japanese style hand plane a "Kanna". The plane he is using was given to him as a gift by Ito San, a Japanese Master Carpenter, who attended the class. Ito san made the plane's wooden body, which has some very nice inlay on it. Ito san is the fellow wearing the white ball cap.

  • Japanese planes are made from such thin pieces of wood it doesn't seem they would work, but of course they do. Japanese planes also are different in that they have the blade further back. It was very kind of Ito San to give Mr. Hack such an expensive gift.

  • Oh my gosh, that has to be sharp!

  • It's pretty cool seeing how woodworking can bring people from such different cultures together. Thank you for posting this.

  • Do you know who made the iron?
