from season 6 episode 15 "The Quest" - joel's very last episode on NX

as per requested by TheShgrbear

Riddle by Gustav the Gatekeeper (Adam): How do you keep the one you love?
Joel's answer: You don't. Love is selfless, not possessive. If you truly love somebody, you have no desire to possess them. You don't keep them.

Adam/Gustav's quip "Quiz Show boy" refers to Morrow's appearance in the movie Quiz Show (1994). He also says "This isn't brain surgery" referring to his own appearance on Chicago Hope which steals NX's coveted Monday night slot. In this sequence, he finishes with "think you're going to find something out there? It's not as easy as you think." This seems to be directed at Rob, not Joel - perhaps to warn him the jump from TV to film is difficult. On Chicago Hope, there once was a page for Dr. Fleischman. -- from http://home.comcast.net/~mcnotes/mcnotes.html

  • Such an amazing show.

I was a kid when it was on TV, but even then as a child I knew I was watching something very special.

The shit on television today couldn't hold a candle to this type of writing.

  • "You don't". Love how Joel just knew the answer!

Love the show. Love this scene!!

  • @bornbillsmith I liked them.

I could also add Hill Street Blues, Saint Elsewhere My so Called Life and Boston Public.

These were great shows in my opinion.

Have you seen Fring.or the Mentalist.

Are you going to tell me these six shows weren't great.

  • @bornbillsmith ... really??? you're comparing Northern Exposure to Glee and "Ungly Betty"???? I guess that's why you don't understand when people say they don't MAKE shows like this anymore.

  • I thought it was a great show but I don't understand when people make comments like is the best show ever and they don't make shows llike this anymore.

    I got news for you.

THERE ARE ALOT OF GOOD SHOWS AND THEY AREN'T ALL from the past...

I lliked The West Wing. Cheers,Ungly Betty,Life on Mars and Lost to name a few from the past,

I like Bones, The Mentalist,Fringe, House and even Glee.

  • Gustav... love it!!! Adam heavy sarcasm is perfect... such depth and substance... rich with metaphor and meaning... todays TV has regressed into such stupidly... but NX illustrates the potential for TV ability to express awe and moving prose... not all is lost... like a alcoholic who has destroyed his life... TV can come from from its proverbial gutter...

  • Love Joel! (no news!) Thanks!

  • Joel looked so foxy with a beard and long hair. But then again I always had such a crush on him.

  • the best show ever

  • No wonder that this show was such a great success.

Very good actors, meaningful dialogs and stories.
