A pedal powered flying machine built for Clockenflap 2008, a multimedia arts and music festival in Hong Kong. When the back wheel turns a ... all » V belt transfers the rotational force to a car alternator. This then generates electricity and powers a high torque motor that then causes the wings to flap

  • The idea was to just show people that you can make your own electricty in a fun way. There are far more efficient ways for sure. Just a bit of fun and nothing more.

    Read the description, people.

This isn't supposed to be serious.

Ignoring the ignorant among us, this is a great little machine. I like the play on the festival's name. c:

  • lol this is grate, but the prop is on backwards xD

  • Not as much fun as the serious versions, but i suppose it's a nice workout. There are plenty of other pretty things to look at.

  • This is some cool art. It is not intended to be a real flying machine.

  • When you convert mechanical energy to electrical in the alternator you lose a great deal (more than half) of your energy because an alternator isn't too efficient. You lose a great deal more of your energy going back from electrical to mechanical in your motors. You'de get much faster propeller and wing action if you ran everything mechanically instead of converting to electrical then back to mechanical, it would be ligher too.
