QUEENS GETS ITS OWN CURRENCY
Artists produce Jamaican Bucks as part of the Exhibition Jamaica Flux: Workspaces & Windows 2007, which was organized by Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning.
On Saturday, September 29th, residents and visitors to Jamaica, Queens witnessed the launch of Jamaica's own local currency, Jamaican Bucks. For a limited time, they were available and redeemable at designated vendors in Jamaica, a result of a community project called Counter Culture Cash by artists Athena Robles and Anna Stein.
Local currencies are a great transition device to an entirely moneyless world. Like supermarket coupons that have no cash value, they facilitate exchange without all the control issues that standard money has. Why must we pay to live on the planet we're born on?
