This is Red Skelton's commentary piece on the Pledge of Allegiance. I hope you enjoy it. Search YouTube for a video of him doing it himself... It's wonderful!
Happy Fourth of July!

  • Believe it or not I am from Vincennes, Indiana and my family owned the birthplace of Red Skelton and we met him several times. I was a small biy at the time and he was the same man in person you saw on TV. Warm, courteous, charming and funny. I remember watching his show and seeing his recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance as a boy. Most of my schoolmates saw it too, oddly enough most of us grew up to be Libertarians. LOL I don't know why I find that funny; but I do. Anyway Thanks compcarp.

  • @hoosierarcher Thank you for sharing this! I'm truly honored.

  • @compcarp You're welcome. I live in Vincennes now too so if you live in or near Vincennes maybe we can meet up some time and discuss Mr. Skelton over coffee.

  • @hoosierarcher I'd LOVE to take you up on such a generous offer! My only knowledge of Mr. Skelton are memories of his TV Show, movies (Three Little Words is my favorite), Baby It's Cold Outside (Brilliant!), his Pledge of Allegiance AND my FAV - The Littlest Christmas Tree from A Child's First Christmas Album. It has since been re-released WITHOUT this story. Too religious or patriotic or politically incorrect, I suppose.

I would have loved to have met him. He seemed so genuine.

  • @hoosierarcher I live in West Virginia... who knows, maybe I'll have to make a trip through there just to say, hello!

  • What's a pity is people who can't accept that the fact that a majority of American's did (and still do to a large extent) have a belief in God and wanted to reflect that in a pledge to our flag. Otherwise, it seemed like we were giving reverence to an inanimate object - while our founding fathers and many founding documents gave reverence to God.

  • @compcarp I visited West Virginia on a few occassions and I honestly think it has some of the most beautiful country in the eastern US.
