Actually this was what they called a "Backdoor Pilot" episode. It was hoped it would become a TV series, it should have been, the characters were great

I think this shows that just because another's culture and ways seem so different that we think of them as less is wrong. Even though the humans had been there for 11 years they didn't even bother to get to know anything about the natives and had no clue about their burial rites or how they give birth or raise their kids.  Sad, all the humans had to do was take some time to learn about the others they were sharing the planet with.
