Piazza San Marco (St. Mark's Square - San Marcoplein) is located in the centre of Venice. It has been the seat of the archbishopric since the 19th century. The Piazza is dominated by the St Mark's Basilica, the Doge's Palace and the Basilica's campanile, which stands apart from it. The Piazza San Marco is the lowest point in Venice and it is the first to flood during high water or heavy rain.
It is the only urban space called a piazza in Venice. The others are called campi.
