The typical posture in the US changed around 1920, and now 80% of Americans suffer from serious low back pain at some point in their lives. This video will teach you simple guidelines for pain-free sitting that you can start practicing right away, wherever you are.

When you change your sitting posture you can reduce back and joint pain and feel much more comfortable and relaxed while sitting. Rather than squirming around constantly, you'll be able to sit longer, more comfortably.

Many people complain of back pain from sitting, and this is the easiest position to start with to improve your posture in general.

The Balance Posture Method is based on the work of Noelle Perez-Christiaens and Jean Couch, who have studied healthy posture in less industrialized cultures for decades. This is the same posture that all children have up until age 3, even in the US. After 3 we imitate those around us and lose our natural alignment in industrialized countries.

This video features Dana Davis, Certified Balance posture teacher and Certified Yoga Teacher. Dana is the owner of Sonoma Body Balance, a posture and yoga studio in Petaluma, CA.

  • Chopin65 - good luck with that. Remember to relax once you align your bones. There's no need to "hold" the position. If you get on your sitz bones, your back muscles will be able to relax much more, and that should help. Also check that your keyboard isn't too high or too far forward.

  • I slouch and slump all the time and my back doesnt hurt. My back hurts when I try to sit up straight

  • @paultheuglydog - Hi Paul, It may be that you are tightening your back when you try to "sit up straight." Did you try sitting like I showed in the video? If you aren't sitting on your sitz bones, that will make it impossible to hold the position comfortably for long. If your pelvis is tucked and you're sitting on the back of your pelvis (on your tailbone or sacrum), then your back will tend to collapse. So, get your sitz bones under you, then relax and let go of the effort. Hope that helps!

  • Great - thank you! Much more comfortable. :)
