Paul Randall from Yeovil, England asks:

"Does Google take into account the URL of an image when searching - e.g. could domain.com/cats/lolcatz/m.jpg appear in a Google search for 'lolcatz'?"

Spanish subtitles provided by Diego Pérez.

This video is part of a "Grab Bag" series in which Matt Cutts, head of Google's webspam team, answers questions from webmasters. We're not currently taking new video questions, so your best bet for getting an answer about webmaster-related search issues is to head to our help forum: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Webmasters?hl=en

  • Yes. The file name is the first thing an engine looks at when trying to figure out what an image is. If you can't get around that script at least make sure your alt text is descriptive and you have meta information of the image.

  • With anything there will always be the seeding talking advantage. It is nice to see google stepping up, and trying to combat this. We should all take responsibility for what we post, and the comments. Not necessarily the difference of opinions, but negating the spam.

  • What I did, Matt, I uploaded all the images to Picasa Web Album (PWA). From PWA I upload it to my weblog site. Next I recheck it by using keyword search 'michaeldadona photo'

  • I just got through changing the names of a few dozen pictures on my site from names that are descriptive to names that are easy to process in a script. So, for instance, what was called "hornytoad" is just a member of a series such as "bc05" or something generic like that. Did I do something that will diminish the likelihood of people finding the image?

  • Matt said he answered this question earlier. Can anyone point me to where he answered questions before. ?

  • A Matt Good but again same old T-Shirt :)

  • Good answer as almost always :-) I can't help wondering if we will se videos with your new and way more masculine hair cut?

  • Happy to help! :)
