Security has been stepped up along the border areas of West Bengal for the ongoing Hindu festival of Navratri.
The threat of militants looming over India's borders with Bangladesh and Nepal has led to tightening security measures.
[Kunda Lal Tamta, Inspector-General of Police, North Bengal]:
"There is a general threat that terrorists from across the border might come and attack us. For that we have alerted BSF there and requested them to seal the border. And also we have asked the local police stations along the border to have patrolling done and seal area."
Paramilitary and border security forces have been put on high alert and police patrols have been increased.

State police have also increased patrols in major towns along the northern Bengal plains with vehicles checks in force.
The North Bengal plains are one of the areas most vulnerable to infiltration by militants, because of more than 600 miles of border with Nepal and Bangladesh.
