ANCHOR:
Over in Indonesia a suspected rabies patient died on Wednesday in Bali. This brings the total number of rabies deaths to five in recent months. Heres the full report.

STORY:
The patient that died from rabies was Ni Ruken, a 45-year-old from southern Kuta. According to her nephew, Ruken was bitten by a stray dog around three months ago.

[I Made Puja, Ni Rukens Nephew]:
After three months, the bite had already healed, but suddenly the disease relapsed, and she got an arm cramp, pain in the chest and a temperature.

She was sent to hospital and died 24 hours later.

Rabies cases have been increasing in southern Kuta. Even though the Bali government has tried to control the disease by giving vaccines and euthanizing stray dogs, it is still not enough to control the rabies virus in this area.

  • Because like Hinduism in India, stray dogs are allowed to wander around and are not destroyed. The control of strays is fundamental in rabies control and eradication programmes.

  • Good report.

In the U.S., canine rabies has been eradicated, but rabies in wildlife is on the rise - in raccoons, skunks, foxes, coyotes and bats. We are trying to get the word out in the U.S. that rabies is here and can be found in every state. Rabies is deadly.
