James Kalm had been requested, no demanded, to provide his worldwide viewership with a glance at this, Brice Marden's first New York showing since his retrospective at MoMA in 2006. Slipping into the Matthew Marks Gallery just before closing time, painting fans will see major pieces from "Letters" the artists recent series of work. Using a subtle yet nuanced palette, and working his paintings with solvents and scrapping, Marden creates seductive surface qualities that charm observers. The addition of horizontal boarders, a new development, implies a return to previously used formalistic compositional devices. We also see a group of works on paper started during the artist's recent trip to China.
Hey you got my email and obliged my request! Thanks so much - Keep up the great work. Its good to see marden pushing things a bit. After attending the retro in 06, i was wondering where he would go. Glad to see him still trying to push

Love the show, sorry you skipped over what seemed like a very interesting piece at 6:27. I think Chris Wool follows this tradition very closely; I like him too, but Marden better.

these are cool.
"But is he the greatest American painter in activity?"
this is a cool comment. if i compare everyone that ever was, as a painter, everyone sinks to a level of crapiness,

I'm liking this. A lot. You walked too fast at 6:26. Best of the holidays. So much work, I'm hoping you hold up. Thanks, thanks, thanks.

It looks like a reworking of the Cold Mountain series, but with a different take on space. Also, the colors are beautiful, decorative in the good sense of the word. But is he the greatest American painter in activity?
