March 2005
With global fish stocks on the verge of collapse, corporations are turning to the Pacific to catch the last abundant fish. But it's a trend destroying the livelihood of locals.

"Before it was very easy. But these days you sometimes spend the whole day and you will only catch five fish," laments one fisherman. With too many fishing vessels chasing too few fish, marine ecosystems are collapsing. The Pacific ocean, once considered too remote for many fleets, has now become one of the world's most important fishing grounds. But commercial fleets are emptying the ocean and depriving locals of a much needed source of income.

  • Most importantly fisheries need to be managed based on sound scientific information and they need to be ENFORCED. Ownership is absolutely key but of course most of the ocean isn't owned by anyone hence the tragedy of the commons - it just becomes a race to catch as many as possible

  • for the oceans are thy tears as i merge the two systems charge them with thy tears and drench them. I am going to wake them up.
