Pantheism-Panentheism: New Spirituality, Old Lies

Pastor Mark Driscoll examines Luke 2, where an angel announces the birth of Jesus, Christ the Lord, to shepherds in a field. The angel reveals how we are to see Jesus. We are not to insert him into a false ideology (e.g., atheism, deism, pantheism/panentheism, or theism) that offers no hope, no good news, no savior. Rather, we are to praise Jesus like the angels, Mary, and the shepherds did.

In one sense, I fail to see the essential difference between monism and theism. One of Pastor Driscoll's main criticisms of pantheism/panentheism is that good and evil are one; two sides of the same coin. The thing is, according to the Bible God is sovereign and He is in charge and in control of everything that happens in His universe; nothing escapes His will. According to Isaiah 45:7, for example, it says, "I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things."

In defense of pantheism, consider Paul's words: "But much rather is it the case that the members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary." Pantheism sees the Whole as God, not individual things as little gods. Nor does it typically see God as omnibenevolent, and thus avoids the problem of evil. And cancer, though ugly on the macroscopic level, is made up of the same beautiful atoms and subatomic particles of which all things are made.

Perhaps he should have asked himself what good and evil actually represent, not necessarily two opposing forces but rather the same thing from two different perspectives - they are ultimately relative and could not exist without each other.
