I don't see Sawyer thinking before he acts when he speeds up the bomb timer as in many other scenes, like when they meet Tom in the forest and when he shoots the federal agent.

Sawyer isnt a follower exactly. He's like the guy who'll follow you because he doesn't want to lead and have the problem of leadership on his shoulders. He's kinda like the back up leader.
