Pokemon Shiny Gold is a rom hack by Zel at The PokeCommunity Forums. If you're watching this video, you've probably heard of it already. It's a hack of Fire Red that creates a beautiful (though only semi-complete) 3rd generation remake of Pokemon Gold Version. It's NOT an official game, but it's also not a fake- if you have to call it anything, I suppose the most appropriate term would be "fangame."

In the video, there are several annotations that appear and disappear too quickly to read. It's intentional- just pause the video to read them. These include a description of my Pokemon and Claire's, which is important from a strategy perspective if you play the game yourself.

I added a lot of commentary of my own. The purpose of this video is basically to be entertaining and show some of the important strategic decisions people have to make when playing Pokemon. It's often criticized for being a kid's game, and while that's true, it doesn't mean it isn't a deep and compelling RPG as far as the gameplay's concerned!

Also, these are the Pokemon I plan to use throughout the rest of the game. The reason I didn't post any videos until now is because I was unsatisfied with my team. :P Also, note that Dragonair and Pupitar can't be caught in the wild by this point in the game- you have to buy them from the Game Corner with your coin case. Dratini costs 2,100 coins (which you can buy at 500 coins for 10,000P, or roughly 42000P total) and Larvitar costs 5,000 coins (100,000P TOTAL!) Thankfully, you gain a LOT of money in Shiny Gold, but as you can imagine I don't have many items to use during this fight.

I was also INCREDIBLY lucky in some parts of this battle. Just saying. The recommended level is at least 35 for all Pokemon, and I'm quite a bit below that, with no Ice-type attacks to boot.

And one last thing: The only reason my Pupitar knows Rock Smash is because you need it to get through the gym. I had him forget it directly after this in favor of using HM Pokemon for the rest of the game. The only reason my Typhlosion knows Strength is because I can't teach him anything more useful yet.
Enjoy!

  • Incidentally, my Dragonair's speed in this video's only 53. Not only is he faster than her Dragonair, but the only ones that AREN'T are Slowpoke and Pupitar.

  • The CPU Pokemon either have no EVs or incredibly low IVs because your level 30 Dragonair was faster than the CPU Dragonair at level 37.

  • I know. It's not very good, is it? :P Still, convenient for me.
